Unless the BOD have changed their policies in both leagues, I thought it was a year to year or case by case issue as to how many AS teams there would be for each program. As for the coaches and their teams, what were your statements to your team at the beginning of the season as for what goals do we as a team and players want to accomplish? Now, I might be wrong and I have been wrong before (I don't have all the right answers - just thoughts), didn't we as coaches tell our players our first goal was to try and win the League and move onto the City Championship. Then at last was to try and make 1 of 3 POSSIBLE (board decision) AS teams?
If the BOD's choose to go with 3 teams (as an example) in the A/AE, with a team of 11-12's it is an option for the parents to allow their player (11 yr old) to move on and play with the 12's. I believe it is total wrong for parents to dictate if their player don't go up then he will not play. It should be, he plays for one or the other. What kind of message are we sending to our players? What I do know is that when Kramer played for me the question came to me as his coach, would I let him go up with the 12's? It was not my decision, it was the parents. I believe they made the right choice that year for their son (he stayed with the 11's). If he goes up and does not perform well then he sit the bench, where he would be playing all the time with the 11's. It is a case by case decision. What is the right thing to do for your player and teammates?
I do understand about trying to put the best possible team together to win the district and more. But I agree with Crash about his son and others who might be equal to him about playing with players in his age bracket. Yes, there are good thoughts of the comparison with HS ball and Little League, but it is just not quite the same. With the 4 Leagues that we have and having to put out 4 11-12's and the rest, maybe it's time for us to look at our boundaries and revert back to 3 Leagues. But before we do that, lets ask ourselves what is our purpose here for? To give our young players a chance to play Little League Baseball, to be more competitive with AS's or both? Either way we go we can only make some of the people happy, not all people. Changes are good, maybe always the best decision but good. A change and good decision was made this year with the inter-league games.
