Last week we're playing the Lynx in a AAA game. We're in the top of the last inning and their team is up, they're up by 9 runs, there are two outs, bases loaded, the batter has two strikes - so what does their third base coach do? He has the runner on third steal home when the catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher. When the kid scores, the coach pumps his arms like he just won the World Series. They were up by NINE runs already.
The same thing happened a few weeks ago when we played the Raptors. They continued to steal home even when the game was completely out of reach. When I ask the coach "What happened to sportsmanship?" His reply was "We're out here to win". As if winning by 10 runs isn't enough.
BUT these coaches who stake their own egos on winning baseball games with 10-12 year old kids, they're the adults that ruin baseball for everyone.

Call me an idiot but I thought we were supposed to teach kids to win with class and lose with class. Scoring on a passed ball (or stealing) when you're up by that much is meaningless...

Hell, this happened this week with my 7 year old at coach pitch. The coach we played against wanted to play 3 out baseball (which is almost unheard of in this league. This is an everyone bats, take one base on a hit, nobody loses/everyone wins sort of league) But our coach relented in the last inning because the other coach kept asking. While our players batted, if they were thrown out, he would actually run over to the base and "punch" the players out and yell "You're outta there!!". One of these children was a little boy who is mentally disabled and he "punched him out" right in front of his face. When they got three outs, some of our kids didn't get to bat so they started to cry. When his team finished their inning we asked if our kids who didn't bat could go ahead and hit - he shrugged his shoulders and said "Why?" Our coach insisted and so he relented, but he didn't want to. This guy was a first class jerk. He coaches the Cubs, by the way, in case he's on here or anyone knows him.
//Craig Cumberland. No way. You were my JV baseball coach.

Good Lord and folks wonder why most kids quit youth sports by the age of 13. I know one of the coaches about whom you speak and yes he has no class! He had similar issues last year. The league addressed it with him and he promised to change. He hasn't. The league should never let him coach again.

Pacman! I was just asking Robby Tury about you last night. Small world. BTW, I coach the Cubs... but Majors.
The silver lining you can take from these experiences is that it's a chance to teach your kids why what these guys are doing is the wrong way to win. It's also a chance for the to lose with dignity and grace. While it would be esy for them to stoop to his level they can learn to tke the high road.

It is ridiculas that any team run bases under those circumstances. As far as the coach that had issues it sounds like he still does. The board needs to address them.

Idiot never, If anyone ever watch you attack a plate of wings "PIG" would be the word. The coach you are talking about already has had a 1 game vacation this year. I totally agree the man should not be coaching.

Unfortunate incident indeed. The reality is that this issue stretches back to recruiting and keeping good board members. It starts with a REAL commitment to the kids and the league. This means work on selecting coaches needs to begin 3 months prior to the commencement of season, by the elected coaching coordinator. This is not meant as a dig to anyone. However, I have seen individuals commit to a board position when they are unable to deliver on the goods. This then places the burden on added members or the President.
This occured with me specifically this year. I was unable to sustain what I felt to be a true commitment to the league. Thus, I announce a step down. Fortunately....Greenie was able to fill the bill. But, this is where it starts. More parents taking active roles in the game. The league is only as strong as parents that step up and commitment to serving on the board, coaching, umpiring, volunteering.
Atleast on the National/N South side we saw symptoms of this coach last year. It should have been taken care then.

At the next level, play like that would probably get his kids some chin music. Maybe Byrd or Chief could enlighten us.

I think maybe you should "enlighten" us. Now I see why someone misses high sometimes.
