It sometimes happens to 11 year olds as well. I know a kid that was brought up from minors to play all stars but should have been drafted to majors in the first place.

This new rule does absolutely nothing to fix the current problem and I know thats why many of you guys are ticked about it and I agree with you on that part. I just see way too many 11s and 12s that are much better than some 9s and 10s that are in majors this season. Part of the reason it happens is because teams pick a potential great player at 9 so they don't lose them in the draft to another team. That is the full reason why I think ALL players in majors should go back in the draft each year but we know that will never happen. I just think it would make sure that more of the 11s and 12s that belong there would be there. We all know there is no perfect system. That is why in my original post I said I would like to hear some ideas on how to improve the system instead of adopting the idea that they did that doesn't fix the problem at all......it just creates another problem just as big. It will be really scary to see those first year 12 year olds in majors. It scares me because it sets it up for somebody to get hurt and none of us want to see that.

Many, many leagues re-draft every year to address the issues you raised Alan. I think you make great points. I also agree the current system is so engrained in Turlock its not likely to change any time soon.

On the other hand Dave, even you would have gotten a year in the majors. Seriously though, who were the idiots who decided self-esteem is built by changing the rules to accommodate folks. That's like saying every 12th grader will be given a year of college. Never mind that the student isn't qualified and doesn't possess the necessary skills. Let's make them feel good and they'll be able to say they went to college when they're 42. I agree with you 100% Dave. be careful Chris, your sounding like a Republican.

There's no perfect system. There are some coaches that overlook a 12 b/c he's thinking to the future. Little League does have guidelines for this though (if the leagues follow it).
But this move makes an imperfect system even worse...

IMO this move keeps it just as bad as it is right now....one is just as bad as the other to me. The difference in the talent level in majors is a recipe for disaster. Some of these big and experienced 12year olds pitching to some of the smaller and inexperienced players is just plain scary. Putting inexperienced 12yos in majors that don't belong is just as bad. Drafting the players that have the highest talent level are the ones that should be there and the difference in talent level won't be as wide. Looking to the future and not drafting the best available player is what causes those 11yo and 12yo to get discouraged and quit. That is why the current drafting system does not work IMO. To me safety is number one....the kids having fun is number 2 and the rest falls into place. If we all come up with enough good ideas and work together maybe something will come of it...just being optimistic. Ok I am off my soap box now...don't stone me too bad.

Lets not forget the 12's who developed a little later got shafted this year because of the age change last year. Some of these kids are playing in the majors for what seems like their 6th year in a row. We also had some new managers drafting and I think they realize after the fact that drafting a 12 would have been better than taking a 9 or 10 and waiting a couple of years for them to develop. Next year we lose 4 12's and already have 6 11's coming back. So right now we can't take a 12 unless the board changes the rule. I think the Giants are in the same boat.

The board has no choice but to go with the 8 that LL allows. Unfortunately, the ground rule about only 5 kids of any one age was put in place to balance the teams. LL took a dump on the league's proactive decision (made about 3 years ago).

So does that mean that we have to 8 12 yrs no matter what. Or do our ground rules still apply.
