Here is the language that passed on the delegate vote.
ITEM 2 – AFFECTS REGULATION V – SELECTION OF PLAYERS – LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL
The selection of players for the various teams within a league shall be in compliance with the Little League Draft Selection System as detailed in the Operating Manual. NOTE: All candidates who are league age twelve (12) must be drafted to a Major Division team. Exceptions can only be made with written approval from the District Administrator, and only if approved at the local league level by the Board of Directors and the parent of the candidate.
Intent of this proposed change: This regulation change would require that all 12-year-olds entering the draft process be drafted onto a Major Division team, unless an exception (before the draft) is approved by the Charter Committee for that individual. In the past, some managers have overlooked otherwise qualified 12-year-old players in favor of a younger draft choice, even though the 12-year-old might be the better player of the two for that season. Research has shown that participants who are capable of playing in the Major Division at age 12, but who are kept in the Minor Division, are unlikely to continue in the sport.
Delegation Vote: 316 Yes (68.55 percent) 142 No (30.8 percent) 3 Abstentions
This will be implemented in 2008

What if you have 5 or 6 12 year olds.

Good question. They'll have to make adjustment to our own ground rules regarding 12 year olds. You may have 8 next year Dave.

so the local NAT/NS ground rules are definatly out the window.
LL states that there shall be no more than 8 12s on a team, what happens if the # of 12s in the league would force the teams to go over the 8 12s rule? would they frorce the leagues to water down even more and open up another team to accomodate those 12s?
so LL is encouraging the selection of a slightly below to way below average 12 year old over a "special" 9, 10, or even 11 year old?

Bullsh*t. I know the motivation. Once we start getting our butt kicked in the World Series again, it will change back.
The motivation is that if a kid invest 5 yrs of little league, he/she should be awarded that one year of majors, so that when that person is 42, they can say they played that one year in the majors.
There are deeper issues here than baseball. It is a sad day when all America is mediocre.

On the other hand Dave, even you would have gotten a year in the majors.
Seriously though, who were the idiots who decided self-esteem is built by changing the rules to accommodate folks. That's like saying every 12th grader will be given a year of college. Never mind that the student isn't qualified and doesn't possess the necessary skills. Let's make them feel good and they'll be able to say they went to college when they're 42. I agree with you 100% Dave.

This is the same crap that "Leave no child behind" is based on. I agree with Scrapper the mediocracy syndrome is alive and well in America. Parachute Parenting is at the stem of all of this. Yes, I know it may assist some but at what price losing the top of the cluster who go on to more competitive sports. Post Secondary Education faces this in community colleges and local small universities...Exception after exception is made and the result is the best and the brightest leave for greener pastures and high competition. LL will end up on this same. There is absolutely nothing wrong with expecting young people to perform to excellence. You can do this in a manner that is motivational and kind, but yet sets the standard for commitment, responsibility, leadership and learning to value what you earn.

Does Little League want to lose business? Hard work is an extinct ethic....

There is more than one way to look at this one. Being the parent of a 12yo that almost did not make it to majors I have to say I agree with the new rule to some point. Some things I have noticed in the 4 years my son has played is that not always the better player gets drafted to majors. Sometimes a 9yo or 10yo that is a coaches son or that a coach thinks has the potential to be a really great player by the time they are 11 or 12 gets picked over the 12yo that is the better player at that point in time. I'm not saying I am all for the new rule but there has to be a better way to do it. You coaches give your input on what might be a better idea. I know of at least one or two 12yos in Triple A that should be in majors over some of the 9 or 10s I have seen this season and something has to be said about paying your dues too. Maybe all 12 year olds that have played at least 3 seasons already are to be placed in majors, not a first or second year 12yo get it automatically. Just my thoughts.

I think it is ridiculous. Little League is going backwards in many ways. I am thankful this will be Graysons last year because it makes no sense at all to draft a player just because they are 12. Good luck to all those involved in 2008.

Letme ask one question with this? Would him making the majors have ment as much or anything, if it was given to him because of his age ? JMO when you earn something you have more respect for it

How about looking at a player that made it because he was 9 and the kid that plays better but doesn't get picked because he is 12.
