OK, let's really stoke the fires! Let's get opinions on Bonds "achievements". I for one belive he did 'roids or some other performance enhancer, probably HGH (human growth hormone). I laugh at the fans that say "it wasn't illegal in MLB when he did 'em." My counter-point... MLB should not have to ban substances that are illegal for Americans to take. Does your work have to ban crack in the workplace?
I was having a conversation with a huge Giants fan about this and he was defending Bonds, using the "it wasn't illegal" argument. He has a kid in Little League. I wondered if his kid were a few years older and in the Bigs what he'd say if he came to Pops for advice. "Dad, I was thinking of getting on the Juice. What do you think?" "Sure son, by all means... it's not illegal!"
Then there's those who say it doesn't help you hit a baseball. No, it just enables you to hit it further, turning warning track shots into round-trippers. Sosa sure was a different player after he got off the juice. And Barry's balls don't seem to go as far this year... alot more fly outs than before.
I feel bad for Maris. His place in history has been all but abolished, thanks to the Roid Ragers. I really believe he should still hold the record. Maybe they should have a "natural" division like they do in body building. He could still hold that title. I also feel bad for guys like McGriff, who may not get in the Hall, even though what he did was natural. Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, Palmeiro all will probably go, even though they got their on artificial means. Their accomplishments overshadow McGriff's numbers. And the argument that Gaylord Perry and others "cheated" to get in, justifying Bonds inclusion, is hogwash. I don't believe Perry belongs either, even though I like the guy. If other kids were cheating and attaining success would you advocate that your son do the same??? And Rose, the poor sum beech, all he did was gamble on his team to win. Pithy fool. So don't let him in as a manager (his title when he committed the crime). Vote him in as a player, he certainly earned it.
OK, let me have it. I want to hear how many people stand up and support a drug user who violates Federal laws and steals hallowed records from innocents. Oh yeah, he didn't get caught. Can't forget that argument... Just b/c you daughter's boyfriend never got caught dealing drugs does that make it OK for her to go out with him?
And this isn't a race issue, McGwire is cast in the same lot as far as I'm concerned - and I thought the world of him - especially when he went out of his way to include the Maris family in the home run race. Perhaps it was b/c he had a guilty conscious?. Gotta love Canseco, at least he owned up to his use.
I have to laugh at some fans inconsistent values. If you wouldn't want your son to be wrapped up in drugs, why would you support a player that is? Would you support a cheat if it meant your son's record was getting wiped out???
BTW, the term fan evolved from the word "fanatic." Maybe that explains the lack of logic applied to many of these arguments...
