What is the best way to go with wood bats for tourneys? The boys use a Brett bat for practice but I need to buy a gamer. Any thoughts on bat and model number?

How much do you want to spend? More people are going to maple instead of ash due to durability. IMO nothing beats the sound of an ash bat when hit on the sweet spot. Maple seems to explode while ash seems to just crack. You could purchase a Sam Bat or a D-Bat for just over $100 but the best bat for the money seems to be the Maxbat MB191 for $79. I've heard good things about the Nokona maple bats and they are $79 as well. Old Hickory claims to have the hardest maple money can buy if that is what you are looking for.
Craig, you should go to Ranger.com, I had to copy and paste this from your archives. You sort of answered your own question.

IMO nothing beats the sound of an ash bat when hit on the sweet spot. How would you know? The last time you hit the sweet spot was during the Reagan administration - long before Maple was in vogue...

i don't see anything wrong with swinging a Brett bat in tournament play........they have a GoBon bat that has good balance....as is the bamboo bats...and the combo maple/bamboo are good too...the only Brett bat i wouldnt use is the 'Stealth' as we broke tho of those in BP...Stealth are ash bats....... MAX bats we had good luck with.......but then again we got ours from the Stockton Ports......at the end of their season...new ones that weren't used for 50 bucks each BWP bats have also shown good durability baseballtips.com/woodbat.htmlthis link will take you to the website where i used to buy all of the CV Warriors wood bats.... they give discount forbuying more than 6 bats

i don't see anything wrong with swinging a Brett bat in tournament play........ Agreed, but all I have is their MB-110 composite bat which is great for BP. The first one I bought lasted over three years and thousands of swings. We're on our second one and it's almost two years old - but it doesn't have the pop of a real wood bat so I was wondering what else people had success with. We bought the Bloodline and it's really well balanced, has good pop and is a good deal at $80.00 (considering Marucci, SAM, and MAX maple bats are well over $100)... but I was hoping to find a comp bat that might last a bit longer than a real woody b/c I don't want to spend a sh*tload of money on bats this summer. The BAUM bat came highly recommended from a local college player so we're gonna give that a shot. The ratings on that in the forums are pretty high... hope it's true!
