A few people have asked... Yes, the Rangers took first this past weekend, going 4 - 0 in the 11 team tourney.
In game 1 we played the East Bay Colt 45s (who are coached by two former major league pitchers). Kevin Kramer & AJ Derr both pitched one inning. Kevin fanned one, Derr two. John Ford followed and tossed two innings, striking out 3. James Heller pitched the final inning and struck out one. They gave up one hit and no runs en route to a 8 - 0 win. Kramer hit a ground-rule double over the ivy at Wrigley... then earned one another the hard way. He also had a triple. Jose Lopez also hit a three-bagger and Zack Abuan doubled. The team scratched out nine hits in all.
Game 2 was against the Delta Dawgs at Fenway Park. We won 9 - 1. Jeremy McDonald went the distance, pitching six innings, giving up just five hits. Kramer, Derr and Heller both doubled and Abuan and Ryan Flood tripled. The rest of the Rangers chipped in several singles, bringing the hit total up to 14 for the game. The 2 - 0 record, combined with just one run allowed, gave us top seed and a first round play-off bye.
Sunday's 12:45 game pitted us against the San Leandro Outlaws. Ryan Cumberland pitched a seven-inning complete game with just 80 pitches and scattered four hits in a 5 - 1 win. The Rangers racked up 12 hits, all singles, at the spacious Polo Grounds.
Kevin Kramer got the ball in the Championship game at Wrigley against the Volcanoes. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits. AJ Derr came on to throw one pitch to coax a lazy pop fly to right end the game. The Rangers pelted 17 hits in a 13 - 4 win. In the fourth it was 5 - 0 Rangers and it seemed we had the game well in hand. But after a base hit and a walk, the Volcanoes # 3 hitter launched one out of the park... not just into the bleachers - OUT OF THE PARK - and made it only a two-run spread. The Rangers answered back by pounding out 8 runs in the top of the fifth. The Volcanoes managed one more run but the game ended in the fifth due to the 8-run rule.
The Rangers pitching staff only gave up five earned runs all weekend (6 total) and the hitters clubbed 53 hits in four games. The defense was stellar and turned several double plays.
Kramer was named MVP, going 11 - 15 (.733) with four doubles and a triple. Zack Abuan was 5 - 9 (.556) with two triples and two doubles. Additionally, three Rangers hit over .400 and none hit below .333.
It was a great weekend for baseball and we couldn't ask for a better venue. The boys had a blast!
Oh wait... Did I tell you this was called the April Fools Tournament??
