Um, OK Mike, but you made my point. Opportuities lost was the topic and I agree with most of what you're saying. No offense but you're kind of stating the obvious. The point was we never prepared this team to live up to its potential. "Development" doesn't take place without practice and sacrafice. Our kids skill level went backwards and thats inexcusable.

T-9 , I think you hit it on the head. Just listening and reading about all of the issues, its seems that to have a great squad everybody (parents, players, and coaches) all have to be on the same page.
I mean parent are investing some big dollars and they want their kid to play. The kids want to play and not ride the pine. The coaches have to evaluate the talent that they pick and try put the win together. I believe the other successfull programs go through the same stuff, it just looks like they don't. Good luck to all Turlock TB in their last weekend and can't wait for Baseball. I am heading to hardcourts the for next few weeks. See ya at signups and tryouts.
And always remember [glow=red,2,300]National Giants are No. 1[/glow]

Unfortunuately, we'll lose many of these kids next year. However, I hear a new 12U Turlock team is being formed and they will be nails. I'm sure they will have the coaching to impress. Shhhh, its suppose to be a secret tho.

The solution to keeping everyone happy on a travel team is to carry 10. That way all the players can hit and you can shuffle the EH into defensive positions every other inning.

i think with proper managing and with your lower end players being very good, one can easily manage a 16 player roster, especially if some kids get classified as "pitcher only"

16 players, It sounds like these teams are having problems with 12 to 13 players. Chris that must be frustrating. To see skill levels get worse is inexcusable. I'm no genius, but I would think a high caliber TB team should be practicing at least three times a week if you are playing tournaments every weekend. If not playing tournaments every weekend than practice 4-5 times a week. That way your player have a couple of days to recoup their bodies. Even 12-13 yrs olds wear out.

Ok I have sit back and listen so here is my 2 cents. I am speaking from my experience for the last 2 years with BYB so please I do not want anyone to take this personal. Being the manager of this team and having a son that plays on this team it is important not to get caught in the mold of daddy ball. Lil Murphy has been told and he lives by this motto, yes daddy is the manager but Tyler is the one that is going to win a position not daddy. I have seen over the past year or so people that coach or manage a team with their kid playing try and put their kids on pedalstals. The problem I have with that is like what has been said in alot of these post, what is going to happen when they get to HS ball and dad can not put his son in the spot light or put him in situations where he knows he will not fail. Lil Murphy has played every position on the field since we formed BYB he has been successful at some and yes he had made his share of mistakes and he knows from his heart that he did all that on his own. Yes I get frustrated when he makes errors on plays that I have seen him make a thousand times, but do I yell at him or do I blame it on other kids to keep my son from facing failure ? The answer is no the only time I get made is when he gets lazy and the reason I say this is, it does not take all the talent in the word to hustle. You show me a team with 9 or 10 kids that think they are super stars and do not hustle and give me a group of kids that may not be on the same talent level but plays the game with all hustle and heart and I am sure you can be just as successful as the super stars probably better. 12 kids is a good number to carry and be honest with the parents up front before you start taking money from them. If a kid is just going to pitch or if he is going to be a situational player be up front and tell the parents and kid, that way they can choose to stay or leave before the invest money. As far as the 12u Rangers and like I said do not take this personal it is just my opinion for what it is worth. You can develop players and have a winning program at the same time, and to do this just pick your games and opponents and put the developing in on the right team and game and then go for the win when the opportunity arises. We all know ahead of time who our opponent is and how tough they are and what it will takes to beat that team. In doing this you can plan your lineup ahead of time and everyone gets their shared amount of playing time. Lil Murph has been on the bench, in the spot light, he has been very successful and he has had his moments to fail and I have let him do this on his own and believe me he is very happy and humble to be able to play this great sport. I have told him time and time again he is the only one that can make a name for himself. The only way to do that is with his talent on the field and not from saying what he has done or by daddy making sure he is always in a win, win situation. I truly beleive that failure builds character, strength, and gives kids more will power to be better at what ever sport they are involved in so yes daddy ball is nothing but failure waiting to happen. I only say this because when I started this thing with Craig these same players were a part of that team and I am sure Chris and Craig both can tell you how successful we were. That is just my 2 cents so I will end with that and by the way BYB took second this weekend in the 12u division in Sacramento we lost to a very big hitting team Demons Baseball Club 8-3, but one thing I can say my 10's and 11's hung right in their and were not intimidated by these big boys. BYB will be in Chino Hills this weekend for the Elite 24 World qualifier. Good luck to everyone this coming LL season and if I can do anything to help you guys feel free to give me a call.

Mclean: I see what your saying about classifying pitchers as pitchers only. That doesn't always work at the 14U and down. I see most of these good pitchers are often times your best athletes, a far cry from the old days(Cumberland) when pitchers were considered non-athletes. So to carry more than 12 on a 12U team is just setting up a potential nightmare for the coaches. They will be second guessed everytime they turn around, even when they win. It's too far away from h.s. ball for the kids and parents to understand at this level.
Chris: I know I was stating the obvious but sometimes people still can't grasp that either. I wasn't knocking you or the coaches of your team. I get frustrated just like you are, when you have the talent it's a shame to not exploit it. My point was more of statement that when things don't go as planned you have to scrap the plan and find what works. I know you will get it straightened out and will be successful next year. I just think we can all learn from these experiences and build from them. Next year is right around the corner.
Speaking of DaddyBall: A friend asked me the other day a good question. Name a local kid that has made it to the next level (D1 college or professional) in any sport that had thier dad coach them for most of thier childhood? My list was pretty short.

Mike ~
I didn't mean for my comment to sound condescending or anything. If you took it that way I apologize. I wasn't knocking you either but I was knocking the coaching staff of our team (those who were allowed any input anyway).

LOL, sorry Chris, I guess Crash is rubbing off on me. Stating the obvious was his niche. I'll get back to being more creative and original. Keep your head up, next year is gonna be fun was the only point I was making.
