The trip to Chino Hills was a bit long. The fields are not quite as good as Manteca so it would make one wonder why make the drive? My answer would be this - our Nor Cal boys need to see what the competition is like in So Cal. Although there were a few weak teams most were solid up and down the line-up. Sound mechanics at the plate, good D and lots of quality pitching (though I didn't see one dominant pitcher). For an 11U tourney I saw a lot more benders for that age group than we do up here. Some pretty nasty ones too. I think it would be an invaluable education for anyone who wants to see what there sons will be up against when it comes time to fight for college scholarships.
The other reason to make the trip - this time of year - is the blue skies and sunshine. Waking temps there were fit for t-shirt and shorts and here it was about 35.
And though the fields were not as good as Manteca they are a helluva lot better than anything else around here.

In the fall nationals we faced a few teams from so-cal and I will say I was amazed at how solid those teams where. We were there with the raptures and I was proud to compete with teams of their caliber and come home with a 4th trophy. I think crash said it well. Playing teams like these, will educate us as to the competition our sons will be facing in the near future.

Southern California teams have never impressed me although they are considered better than Norhtern California teams.
When the Twins from Clovis/Fresno were 11u and 12u they beat every great Southern California team. The CA sliders, now 11u beat all the best Southern California teams.
Like Kenny mentioned above, our Raptors team went 4-1 against Southern California teams, some of the best like Chino Titans, former triple crown champs.... and honestly we were only a .500 team around Northern California at the time.
I know BYB has gone to Southern California and beat some of the best teams too. Maybe not this time, but they have in the past.
Some teams out of San Diego put together incredible teams and go win Cooperstown and right now Culver City has the most dominate 13u team in the country but Southern California teams overall, I believe are at the very best equal to Northern teams.
