Turlock Warriors - loaded with local talent
By JOHN-JOEL GRIFFITHS
The Turlock Warriors' competitive summer/fall travel baseball squad is essentially an All-star team full of local talent.
Pitman and Turlock High incoming seniors Ian Fregosi, Austin Keaton and Sergio Perez are just a few locally-known players featured on the roster.
Pitman High's now-graduated seniors, Bradin Hagens and Anthony Jakosa, are also on the club along with Trevor Cesar out of Golden Valley, and Nathan Gonzalez, who will be entering his senior season at Pitman.
The Turlock Warriors are 10-2 overall this season, and they will be headed to an 18-and-under tournament in San Leandro this upcoming Labor Day.
On Sept. 15-16 the Turlock Warriors will be hosting a tourney here in town, which will most likely be at Turlock High.
Premiere baseball programs like De Le Salle High from Concord are scheduled to participate in the tourney.
"This is my third year with the team," Warrior coach Marcos Perez said. "They're primarily the same core. I usually go out scouting players during high school season, and I recruit them for summer and fall ball."
Pitman's former starting catcher Jakosa is also the Warriors' starting catcher for the summer time. He will be headed to Merced Junior College, where he and Hagens will get to play baseball at the next level.
"What can I say about Jakosa other than his defense is outstanding," Perez said. "Some teams we play against won't even try to run on us. Defensively, he's one of the best catchers in the area."
Hagens has only surrendered two earned runs during this summer after making two starts. He bats exactly .500 and is 19-for-38 with six doubles and 16 RBI.
Keaton has only played in two games and is currently 3-for-8 on the season. Fregosi has hit 15-for-40 with a .400 batting average and has only struck out once. The centerfielder has also registered three doubles.
"Even though we're not a top-notch program paying a lot of money and stuff, we still compete with the best programs," Fregosi said. "It's a lot of fun because it is a good baseball environment. It's low-key, but it's still serious. We have fun, but we also win, and play well. So, we have fun playing well, rather than just joking around and losing."
The Warriors are made up some of the top players of the Central California Conference, the Modesto Metro Conference and the Western Athletic Conference.
Turlock High incoming senior Perez has been switching from second base to shortstop throughout the year. He is also batting .290, and draws four bases on balls for every one time he strikes out.
Keaton, who has missed a majority of this summer's games because of vacations, has still been invited to participate in several elite baseball camps.
The Pride standout has received invitations to the San Francisco Giants' scout team camp, as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers' showcase camp.
"I just got a call from the Dodgers," Keaton explained. "And they're having a showcase in Dodger Stadium on Sept. 24-26, and I'll be playing with the Giants' scout team next month as well."
