Congrats to Big Alex and the Turlock Bombers for their 2nd place finish this weekend in the 13U BPA tourney at Big League Dreams. Little Alex pitched a gem in the play-off game to get them to the finals. Tommy Evans made several Sports Center highlight plays at 1B and Michael Lopes crushed the ball.
Wll done!

The boys played well and looked like mid season form even though it was the first tournament! Alex did pitch a great game against a powerful lineup! It was great but we still have some work to do....

TURLOCK HAS ALOT OF TALENT, WE DONT NEED OUT-OF-TOWN PLAYERS... if your goal is to develope, then ya, you dont need out of town palyers. but if your goal is to play the best with the best and be considered amoung the best there is NO WAY it can be done without out of town help, period.

I think there will be a long standing debate about :
* Do we develop ? * Do we only want to win ? * Do we try and blend winning w/developing ? * Do we want TURLOCK ONLY players? * Do we look for the BEST PLAYERS regardless where ? * How much travel ?
There is fit for everyone, where trouble seems to surface is when you try and put ALL THESE TOGETHER on the same team....

So what do you pay these out of town ringers. Do you cover there costs and tell them just show up or what. Because there is always a cost.

with every year that passes i gain more and more "out of town players", simply because every year we have made out schedule more and more difficult in terms of competition.
out of town players pay the same anount as in-town players on my team $370 per fall/winter season and actually one could make the case that the out of towners pay more because they have to do more traveling to turlock for practices

I'm for developing 60% and winning 40%. It really isnt that big of deal to win a weekend tournament when you are 12 or 13 but for planning for the future. But everyone wants to win too and that's a big deal. Mark never saw the movie Hoosiers I guess? They were one small town weren't they. Ha. L Boullion

On any given weekend in the central/northern California area there are several tournaments being held - and several "champions" will be crowned... so which one is truly the best? Even Nationals really don't determine who the best team is. There's several different organizations and not all the best teams go...
I think it's a lot cooler to develop a team and win with a group of players from one town than to have a casting call and take your shown on the road with a group of hot shots from a geographic region. The latter team should win and therefore the accomplishment isn't anything that special... but when you can take a group of players and teach them the game - and develop friendships along the way... that's something worthwhile. If, in the process, you can develop talent for the local high schools that's cool too.
Of course you can do the same thing with players from several different cities as well. But the stage wouldn't be about winning local tournaments, it would be about developing a team to compete on the national level - and if a coach was able to do so then that accomplishment would be pretty grand... just as a local team being able to compete with the best teams in their region. Both experiences could be something special... but what I see too often in travel ball are "academies" or teams trying to assemble the best players, who come and go, and all the organization cares about is winning. Pretty shallow. I think it should be about something more. When it's done right, it's something pretty damn special.
For me the dividends will come when these boys are in high school and we'll be able to see their experiences paying off. So what we do now is about two things - having fun and working toward something bigger (several years) down the road. For most it's high school baseball. For some I hope it's college as well. Perhaps a few will eventually get paid to play ball and will live the Bull Durham experience. And maybe one will travel the same road as Reichert or Soderstrom or Lesley and make "The Show." But if my boys only have as much fun as I've had playing this game then they'll have themselves one helluva time! If that's all they take away from baseball then I'm a happy man.
It's not about the hardware, it's about the memories made along the way.

I agree with some of that fantasy crash. My thing is...........if your lacking a player or two to solidify your team as a coach, and you don't have players from Turlock that are willing to play for many reasons ( may it be football, soccer, etc.... ). Why can't you take a kid from another city that wants to play, and ad his talent to your team. His talent may be as good or better than your present team and could help win a few games along the way. If you play all year and can't win a tourney, it's not a pleasurable journey for these boys at all. ( whether you are trying to prepare them for high school or not, it brings their confidence down). The point is, why is it about TURLOCK......TURLOCK.......TURLOCK. It's about the boys. There's talent in Turlock but , not all of the talent wants to play. So why exclude a talented kid from playing on your team just because of where he lives??

If read the Rangers website I think you'll find I agree... and we do carry a player from Gustine on our team BTW, I think the players should have fun playing. If it's all about the winning they are getting the wrong message. Yes, the goal is to win but if we don't they should still have fun. I believe the majority of my players do. It's not the destination, it's the journey...

I TRIED TO FILL MY TEAM WITH SOME GOOD TALENT LAST YEAR FROM (MODESTO). IT WAS A MESS. IT DIDNT WORK OUT AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD. I'M NOT TOTALLY AGAINST GETTING OUT OF TOWN PLAYERS, JUST BE CAREFUL...
THEY WERE VERY TALENTED, BUT SO WAS ONE OF THE KIDS DAD'S MOUTH... I'M NOT IN TO THAT CRAP, I JUST WANT MY KIDS TO HAVE FUN AND GET THE EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING REAL BASEBALL.
