Mark ~
I have heard nothing but good stuff about Mendoca. I was rather saying guys like Cumberland, Murphey and maybe even BUfford have a gift for working with this younger age group. I think coaching is different at the younger level.

Excellent thread/subject…I believe as parents/coaches we all need to exercise some discipline in how much baseball ( or any sport for that matter ) that is played in any one season. I know that my son would play as much as I would let him and is one that would never come out of a game if asked… Chris brings up a very import point, not only should we be concerned with the physical “wear & tear “ on young bodies, but the mental state is also a an important factor to be considered………
I for one….. think it’s important to take a break from this great game. FEB-NOVEMBER is a long season for players/coaches/families After the holidays we will get back and work on some baseball skills, play some roundball ( what better way to get in shape for baseball )
These young men have lot’s of baseball ahead, lets keep this as exciting to them as to us.

I've often wondered if what we're doing is too much. Little League, all stars, travel ball. That's about 100 games a year. In addition to the Rangers the boys have played (legally!) on other teams in January and December. Brett went to Arizona when he was 9 and played on the Raptors 10U team that went to the summer nationals. 10 games in 7 days. Then there's been summer baseball camps and a trip to the San Diego School of Baseball over Christmas vacation. I had wanted the boys to take some time off between the regular season and all stars but the day after the play-offs, as we were driving home frm school the boys asked - literally almost in unison - "can we take some BP today?" I was flabbergasted. Days on the road, hotel rooms, five games a weekend. All stars, traveling here one night, there the next. Practice, practice, practice... Some might call it burn out... I call it a fantasy life! I think the key is to keep it fun. It's always more than just baseball. It's family, hanging out by the pool, team get-togethers, cookies or cupcakes after the game, scones before and team dinners at Logan's or somewhere else. But always - always - it's the boys’ decision to play. There have been many times when they've had a chance to play and decided not to. When we go out for extra practice it's always because they ask. If there's a camp or lessons that I think might be good for them the call is always theirs. Sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say no. And yes, finding time for other activities is important... motorcycle riding, skateboarding, trips in the motor home, amusement parks, the movies, shootin' hoops, football at the park or just hanging out. There has to be a balance - but I feel fortunate to say they are having the time of their lives and baseball has been a big reason why. They have a love for the game. I've often worried about burnout but I'm (almost) 45 and my love for the game continues to grow. A big part of that is because of the joy they get from the game and the friendships that have been created because of it. Baseball has always been the reason for almost every great thing that's happened in my life... and I never went anywhere in the game. But at the end of it all, if the boys get the same degree of enjoyment from baseball (and it's older step-child, adult softball) as I have then whether they go anywhere or not it will have been a road worth having traveled down. When all is said and done it's the memories that matter and I'm fortunate to say I have countless memories from this game. Too much? I still haven't had my fill - so gents, set ‘em up and let's have another round

I think you guys are playing way to much baseball. After All-stars a couple of tourneys. during the summer is fine but 3/4 a month is too much. Put these kids is other sports. I believe the more options you give a kid the better of he will be when he gets into High School. I can really see it in my son. Towards the end of All-Stars he was getting tired of baseball and really looking forward to football. Now as we get down to the last couple of games he is talking about baseball again. Who knows, these studs in baseball might be studs in football also. Plus the colleges love it. The more sports you play the better athlete you are. BTW~Mike Keep dreaming about Turlock High being better in the future. Most of the studs I know are going to Pitman. ;D

Ha - You can't convince these guys otherwise Greenie. The Bash Bros. seem to have a HO for THS baseball for some reason. Perhaps, when National/NS gives them a whoopin in their own park this year they'll come to their senses.

It sure seems that way Chris. I wonder if they are watching the same kids we are. By the time High School comes around those kids will be begging to come across town and play with the big boys at Pitman.

chris, did you ever find out if you were in the Denair District?
just wondering because in the past Pitman recieved transfers from Denair Area because Turlock was at capacity but now i hear Denair Transfers are being sent to Turlock because Pitman is at capacity.
that is if you choose to send jens to a D1 School. the difference in baseball played between a THS and a Pitaman compared to Denair is like night and day
