I learned a good deal from the training that was held at Valley Oaks School. The power point was quite helpful. Some of our biggest shortfalls seem to be in mechanics. Particularly, what is the coverage for the base umps. I missed that training at Soderquist but I bet it would have been very helpful as well.

I don't like where Little League has the field ump set-up with a runner on (between short and third). That's a long look for plays at first. I prefer where softball umps set up (behind the pitcher, a little in front of second). That gives you a great line for plays at all three bases.

I agree with you. I don't understand the change. I recall when LL umps took the same position softball does. I liked it when the PU took the calls at 3rd. Maybe someone could enlighten us on the new thinking.

It seems like a lot of the umps are unsure where to stand or position themselves on the field. Saturday we had a play at 2nd base and both umps just looked at each other and shrugged, finally the home plate ump said safe. I'm not sure he even seen the play, because they were both watching 3rd.

LL thinking on 60 foot bases is that the infield is too little for an adult to be standing in the infield. An umpire that knows where to go could position themselves there without any problems being that most LL umpire struggle with outside mechanics they would be in the way. I have seen umpires in travel ball at 70 feet position themselves in the way of the throw from the SS to 1B and these are generally better umpires.
If you are on the outside the main reason the umpire stays behind the short stop with a runner on third is on a throw from the catcher to third with a runner sliding head first back to third neither umpire has a call if the BU is behind first.

Ah, that makes sense.
