I'd like to hear if the folks on the A/AE side believe if paying umps improves the quality.
I have never understood why everyone in LL is suppose to be a volunteer yet you guys pay your umpires. I don't in anyway mean to be critical. I'm just curious if paying umpires improves the quality of the games being called.

Good question. I think it's like anything - some good, some great, some are inexperienced (be they young or old... I'm not pointing fingers at youngsters). Some know the rules really well. Some understand the rules and their practical application.
I think it'd be great if we offered more training for our umps. Coaches, too. All of us have room to improve our knowledge.

Chris, I dont believe paying the umpires hurts or helps the calls. However on the Am\Am east side we just like showing our appriciation for what the umpires do and have to put up with... I am SURE that everone of you Hottieing about calls have stepped up too, or should I say behind the plate... I have been to games on both sides of Turlock and maybe I missed the games that you umpired but please Chris feel free to come and Volunteer your services on the Am Am east side

Ouch! Thanks so much Randy for your kind words. I'm not sure where you're coming from on this but obviously the UIC job is the toughest in any league. Add in Juniors and Seniors and the job has to be overwhelming. I feel your pain, when I'm not maintaining our league's web-site, attending practice & games as the Giants Manager, My son and I can be found every Thursday night umpiring the 5:30 & 7:30 game at Soderquist. If you're finding it difficult to fill all your slots, sure give me a call.

i like the idea of getting paid to umpire, even a small amout per game would at least pay for my equipment by the end of the year. But, the reality is I began umpiring because the league requires it. I found to my surprise that I actually enjoy it and do more games then required. If you pay the umpiers would that open up other volunteers wanting to get paid as well, board members, district reps.,coaches, snack bar workers is the list endless?

I do believe the umpires that umpire in the Little League World Series in Williamsport are all volunteers which recieve no pay to help with their cost to go to the LLWS. That is what volunteering your time is all about. Very good points about who would want to be paid next Bubba. Keep up the good work!!

The other thing to keep in mind is that only volunteers are covered by the insurance provided by Little League. Paid umpires if injured aren't covered.

Both groups are identical in skills.
True Volunteers will always volunteer, paying your umpires may get more kids involved in umpiring which is good but ultimately it is the non- volunteers playing someone to do what they do not want to do.
Training has been offered to all Turlock volunteers, managers, coaches and umpires and lest than 15% show up.
