wow, the way the araticle learned far to one side one would think he had some kind of connection to the Chowchilla team.
i wonder if he was there or if he took chowchillas word for it??
arent the umpires supposed to be from league other than the ones playing???

here is what i emailed the sun star writer
first of all I wasnt there.
i hope you were because your article was very "opinion" based (should have been in the OP-ED page) and was heavily one-sided.
second, as a former board member i know that the umpires are from leagues NOT associated with the teams playing.
and third it would have been nice if what you say is true to have at least written down the fields name and the League that HOSTED the game as their are 2 separate leagues (Turlock National/National South and Turlock American/American East) thanks to your article whichever league had nothing to do with this altercation will now get the blame in the eyes of your papers readers.

It was an American League game at Julien. Apparently, American provided the umps.

And, Richard was a sports writer or the sports editor of the Turlock Journal several years back. Dates escape me but he did work here in Turlock for several years.

I couldn't help myself I had to respond as well. Here's my email.
Dear Mr. Paolinelli ~ I guess as the Sports editor for the Merced Sun-Star you have the right to throw journalism out the window in favor of placating your home town readers. The home plate umpire you disparaged so shamelessly in your editorial about the Turlock American vs. Chowchilla game is one of the finest we've had call one of our games. The umpire is in charge of the field and on occasion they get the calls wrong. However, right or wrong, we as coaches and parents have to live with the calls made on the field. I found it interesting that your editorial failed to mention that the police were called to disperse the Chowchilla spectators. Apparently, one of the Chowchilla coaches had taken off his shirt and was waiting to fight an umpire after them game. Yet, you only give "credit" to the coaches for apologizing for their behavior. Where was your outrage? I have a couple of questions for you. Did you ever contact Turlock American for their side of the story or do any investigating? Have you ever taken a journalism class? Do you have a kid on the Chowchilla team? It is a tremendous shame that the parents and coaches became so unruly during and after the game. Needless to say, action must be taken to assure this kind of behavior doesn't recur. Unfortunately, you have done nothing with your editorial to assist in making sure this type of behavior isn't repeated. Have the guts to condemn it all or say nothing. On Wednesday night Little league was given a black eye. When your editorial appeared you trashed the values/tenets of your own profession by pandering to your hometown readership. While not disgraceful, despicable or unforgivable your editorial was certainly shameful and unacceptable. Chris Essary Turlock National Little League Parent
