Scottish tidal energy company Nova Innovation is set to generate wave power with its new tidal turbine technology, having secured €m (£m) in funding from the European Innovation Council Accelerator Fund (EIC). The advanced kW device will feature blade pitch control, which will increase the amount of power and energy generated, and a more compact turbine body that will reduce the weight and cost of the device. Together, these innovations will reduce the cost of tidal energy by %, breaking the EU Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET) tidal energy cost target of €/MWh by Implementation of the technology is anticipated to reduce the cost of tidal energy by %. Last month, the govern Caseno Email List ment announced it would invest £m each year in tidal energy through its Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme. Simon Forrest, chief executive of Nova Innovation, said: “Tidal energy is necessary for our future renewable energy mix – it is clean, reliable, predictable and has no visual impact. “EIC funding will help us develop our world-leading tidal energy technology that has been generating power to the grid since “Our current tidal turbine, called ‘EUnice’, has delivered outstanding performance since its deployment in Shetland in “The UpTempo project will build on this success, further reducing costs through innovation and economies of scale. The turbine will be designed to meet the needs of utility customers in our target markets around the world.” Nova Innovation is working on tidal energy projects in the UK, Europe, North America and Asia.
