CenCal also has a 13U developmental team which is great for kids just finishing Little League (majors) and will considered 13 starting Aug. 1 (players who will be 13 as of April 30, 2010). Tryouts for this team take place in the next couple of weeks, check cencalbaseball.org for details)

Wow - for the privilege of trying out. If people are stupid enough to pay it then to each his own.

I don't mean to sound irreverent - seriously. However, if you have 30-40 kids show up for a "try-out" for a handful of spots then these teams are being disingenuous when it comes to recruiting. Especially at $25 a pop.

I've heard similar things bud. I'm not trying to disparage anyone at CenCal as they obviously produce great hitters. Nor am I saying anything about the program or the coaching staff as I know some fine people whose boys play there.
Nevertheless, when you're trying to make a living off teaching kids to play baseball I imagine money can get tight and you get a lil extra where ever you can.

Oakdale HS is charging CenCal to rent their fields for tryouts and it's not as cheap a you might think. CenCal is charging the $10 fee to offset the cost. The fee is not being collected so CenCal can make a little extra cash. There's better ways to make money, like throw a tourney...

That should be CenCal's burden not the kids they're going to reject. That's the cost of doing business. But like I said before if someone's willing to pay for that "privilege" of trying out then to each his own. Hey, the CenCal guys seem to deliver and so they have value. Unfortunately like every other travel team folks (yes, its usually the parents) are going to be unhappy at times. It gets magnified when you're paying out the ass for your kid to play.
Its ok Craig I know you have a real job.

Its ok Craig I know you have a real job. Well, Chaney would disagree with you... but deep down I think it's b/c he's just jealous. BTW, parents also pay for the privilege of their kids playing in front of college & pro scouts at showcase events and for many other things so their kids have a shot at playing ball in college and/or beyond. The dream is alluring - and usually costly I know just from an economic standpoint I'd have been much better off to put all the money I spent on baseball in a college fund. Hell, both boys educations would have been paid for by now... but then we wouldn't have the memories and the boys wouldn't have the dream... and if we don't have dreams what's left? I write this from my hotel room in Marietta, Georgia, (playing in Perfect Game's National Wood Bat Championships) a baseball trip that'll cost me more than I really want to know - just for the privilege of playing in a showcase event... but it's been worth every penny and the memories will last my boys a lifetime. The southern BBQ has been to die for BTW. And these fields and the experience have been incredible. It's baseball heaven back here. Hopefully someday they'll fondly recall the days of travel ball and appreciate what Mom & Dad did for them, whether it results in a college scholarship or not. You're right, the field rental should be a part of doing business... but it might also serve as a way of making sure only kids that are really serious tryout - b/c in the scheme of things $10 is nothing compared to the overall cost. The cold hard truth is that in this day and age, unless your son naturally throws a 95mph+ fastball, it takes mucho denairo to grab the brass ring. Even Bryce Harper's parents have shelled out their fair share of money. What are us mere mortals to do?
