Can you share your favorite player ever and why? Not necessarily the best player but more likely your childhood hero. I lived in So Cal as a kid and loved to listen to Vin Sculley. Steve Garvey was my hero and rarely let me down (consecutive games played by a National Leaguer). Then the ROTTEN DODGER S broke up that great Dodger infield and Garvey became a Padre - a Padre! It tore my heart out. Later in my life it was Matt Williams, Will Clark and JT...

my favorite player was a guy that came up through the Dodgers farm system..............and put up some rediculous numbers as a 19 YO...........at 20 he won CY Young and ROY awards......................this was before the days of pitch counts and he led the league in complete games for several seasons.............that along with a nasty screwball shot his arm and he didn't last as long as he could have..................and just like your favorite player he ended up being released and going to the Padres..............
my second favorite player was a young man that also came up through the farm system. all of 5'8 and 135 pounds while throwing 98 MPH fastballs with boring action and a rediculous changeup that should have been banned..............this young man also put up rediculous numbers as a 19 YO reliever his rookie season for the Dodgers..........he was soon after traded for Delino DeShields (A supposed future can't miss All-Star) of the Montreal Expos........and the rest is History.....................will be in the Hall Of Fame when he retires

I was a So Cal boy too as a kid and was also a big fan of Garvey and the Dodgers of that era... stopped being one when they let Garvey and Cey go. Probably my earliest fav was Koufax. Also became a fan of Clemente b/c my first LL team was the Pirates. Was a big fan of the Hammer too. Big fan of Vida in his early years. All-time favorite is Nolan Ryan. The other is Carlton Fisk. Cal Ripken too. Would also now put Jeter in that group. Can't forget my youngest son's namesake George Brett. Used to like Reggie 'til I met him and found out what a jerk he is...

MY FAVORITE WOULD HAVE TO BE PETE ROSE, HE GAVE 110% EVERY GAME. I STILL THINK HE DESERVES TO BE IN THE HALL OF FAME.

Ditto on the hall for Rose. Gambling? So what?! Some of today's players have done far, far worse.

Agreed on Rose. He may have bet on baseball but he never altered the outcome of a game. McGwire, Sosa and Bonds altered history.
Griffey is definately in the league of all-time greats...

Growing up 100 miles from one of the worst Big League Ball Parks ever did not stop this kid from going to the yard to watch his favorite(s) 'The Say Hey Kid" & "Stretch" How could anyone track down a fly ball in that wind ?

McCovey debuted in 59 Rodney. Were you really in the stands for his first game?

Willie McCovey....best baseball moment . My dad took me to Atlanta (I grew up in Florida as a Giants fan) to see my first Giants game . My dad was 40 and McCovey was 39 approaching 40...my dad said hit one for the 40 year olds....next pitch.....gone......first Giants win on a McCovey homer....just doesn't get better than that for a 13 year old.

Mark- I think Valenzuela was actually 35 his rookie year not 19. He had a few good years and then age and weight caught up to him.
