Ok I have one for Jerry, Paul and Brad.
Let me start by saying this is in no way a criticism because you guys have the training and experience. I am really just curious.
The mechanic that places the BU between SS and 3B seems to make it really tough on the umpire when making a call at first. Are you guys supportive of this mechanic or do you like the old way of positioning yourselves on the infield between the pitcher and 2B?

Well, I'm not one of the three but this has to be one of the dumbest things LL teaches. There's several better places for the ump to station himself. Where they have him is a long way to see (even for people with good eyes and there's several chances the blue will be blocked from the play by a runner or fielder. The better place would be between the 1st and 2nd basebman...

Who or what is this mechanic that places ump in positions. Whoever he is need to put them back between 1st and 2nd.

There must be a reason for it but I know are more edumacted umps are just following a new protocol and have to feel it works.

I would like to be inside that is the best. I have noted before that a lot of LL umpires doing their token game or two would get in the way inside a 60ft field.
Crash’s idea of behind 2nd is good with runners on 1st/3rd or just 3rd. A runner stealing from 2nd to 3rd you would be up the a#% end of the play.
If you are doing your job behind the SS you will make that call at first from the SS side of the inside grass or closer. Too many plant themselves and make all calls from one spot. Umpires need to move at the crack of the bat like players.

I'm one of those token guys but I moved my fat a#% when I needed to and had no problem making the call at second and first as a BU. When did the PU stop being able to hustle down and make the call at 3B?

I like it on the edge of the grass. The farther away from a ZO line drive the better. Unless I can wear my behind the plate mask This only my 4th year so still have alot to learn, but I feel like I can make the call from SS position. Certainly if every fan including Byrd and Greenine can clearly make the right call every time from behind the right field fence the umps should be able to see it from SS position ;D

Don't be embarrassed Chris it's perfectly normal at your age to occasionally "leak" a little when laughing or stressed. Greenie knows of a product Depends I think he called it that might help

From behind second you can move toward the pitcher and get a better angle at 3rd. And behind the plate you could help at third but your first responsibility is if there is interference with the throw from the catcher. What call are you going to make if the tag is at the home plate side of the bag and foot is on the outfield side?
LL is taking the KISS approach for all lack of experience.

I'd do what 90% of the umps in our league do and call him out when he's tagged on the chest regardless of where his foot is. Present company excluded of course. ;D

I know of a solution to this problem. If the umpire doesn't see the play, he should listen the players grandmother. I always see the play and I am always right. I am unbiased, as long as the play goes for my grandson's team. Honest. (Thank Goodness I have on my Depends as I am laughing my a** off right now.) The only thing that is driving me up a wall this year is the umpires giving an auto out when players are tagged but they are either tagged on their legs when they have a head first slide, or their head if a feet first slide. Please make sure that they are not touching the plate when they get tagged. That is what is driving me nuts this year. I have seen this mistake so much this year it is not funny. Gregg Clapper taught me to count when watching this play. To watch the runner and then the base player. He said to try to get a rhythm going and then see which get where first. It is hard to explain in words, but once I watched him do it, it made it easy for me to see if the ball got there first or if the runner was first. Damn I miss him.
