Ah, the good old mothers rights rule. Listed right after the brothers rights rule I think.

From what I have seen, every kid is very rusty at try outs. There is a lot of pressure and it's hard to relax, even for the experienced kids. Plus if you dont get in a good rhythm your whole round is shot. I saw some of the best kids with tons of experience at try outs not hit the ball out of the infield. That made me wonder about all the other kids.
If your not focusing on the swing as a coach in evaluating, then your not doing your job. Where the ball goes, espicially on a 40 degree night doesnt mean much. Do they get around on the swing? Quick hands? Good footwork? DO they see the ball well? and most importantly, can they learn and make the corrections?
Another thought is...... In our machine pitch league by the end of the season all the kids were teeing off on the ball. Machine was set at 44mph but they were 7-9 year olds. That is about the same for a 10-12 at 50-54mph. When a kid swung and missed, it was rare for the good ones. It scared me at try outs, how many kids couldn't connect at all.
Last point, not all kids are going to throw hard and it's not all about throwing hard. Any type of movement on the ball from 46 feet and forget about it.

Since everyone thinks i killed the Braves. I will answer this publicly too. I had a hard time Keeping some of the Braves that left last year. I pleaded with them all last fall telling them to come back to the braves using the TV all star angle everything. I even at one point had them convinced and posted on this board that they were talking about coming back and hitting homeruns. I also told all my players on my travel team to play little league. wether they do or not is not my desicion.

Ken -
No one thinks you killed the Braves. The Braves live. You're responding to my ribbing and you should know that everyone I've ever talked to holds you in the highest regard. I admired what you did with the Braves last year and I am sorry you didn't return. You and your coaching staff were a class act.
That having been said, the league is down 100 kids when compared to National. Two kids who elected not to return don't make a bit of difference. If they prefer travel ball - good for them.
Good luck with the Regulators. Almost everything we do on this forum is about ripping each other. Welcome to the family and fun!
