Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. ~ George F. Will, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, 1990. I've heard a lot of people say lately that baseball is "only a game." That only proves they've grown up (and that's not a compliment . Think back to when you were a kid and you're on the field and it's a Saturday afternoon and you're playin' ball. It wasn't a game... it was EVERYTHING! And that was the beauty of it. We didn't have to worry about going to work, paying bills, making the wife happy or nothing. The ONLY thing that mattered was what was happening on that field. I guess the definition of that is "joy." The smell of the leather, fresh cut grass, and hot dogs gently drifting through the air. And after the game Pepsi never tasted so good. Life was grand. And I don't ever remember wanting to lose. Winning doesn't matter? Tell that to an 11 year old. Every game was the World Series back then, at least it was for me and my gang. And oh what fun we had. We climbed mountains together (winning!) and walked through the valleys of hell together (losing). It all meant so much. That's what it means to be a kid. And that's what made it so damned fun. If it didn't mean so much, it wouldn't have been so fabulous. Oh to be young!

You ain't kidding. Those were the days. Coming to the park on Saturday when all teams played and the records were in the Snack Bar and we would check them out while munching on our free snow cones and watching them put the win on your team. It was a blast. Winning the Championship back to back years.
Baseball, YOU JUST GOT TO LOVE IT. I'm glad my sons love to play the game. Even if they didn't, there is nothing like a little league game between two rival teams.

Hey what about the great pick up games in the park. We played even when it wasn't "THE SEASON" we played until dark in the summer, it was great. How about all the field rules when you only had 7 or 8 guys total. pitchers mound as good as first or right field is an automatic out and ghost runners and does anyone remember there were NO adults around.

Pitcher's mound is as good as first. Now that brings back some memories. No adults, your right bubba, those were the days.

Chaney uses a rolled up sock but doesn't play baseball with it... He calls it an "enhancement. "
